Manistee County is known as the Fishing Capitol of the Midwest, offering over 25 miles of beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline and attracts fishermen from all over the world because of our large population of salmon & trout. In fact, the world's record Brown Trout was caught August 10, 2009 in the Big Manistee River - measuring in at 41 lbs 7 oz! Northern Michigan's numerous inland lakes, including Portage Lake, Bear Lake, Hamlin Lake, Crystal Lake, just to name a few....... and the miles and miles of sandy Lake Michigan beaches, combined with a pleasantly cool summer climate, have long attracted vacationers and people looking to call this area home.
